Two of the most prolific photojournalists working today will teach a workshop together for the first time in San Miguel de Allende Join Q. Sakamaki and Spencer Platt in this opportunity to develop your skills in the photo essay under their tutelage. Spencer and Q. photograph in the documentary tradition, yet look to the dynamic aesthetic of street photography to make their work transcend visual cliches.
You will spend days working with each instructor to gain additional insight from Spencer and Q.'s many years of working around the world on stories of global impact. The objective of this workshop is to improve your skills as a visual storyteller while pursuing personal documentary projects. The team will help each member of the class define their projects and monitor story development in daily critique sessions. The critiques will be both in a group format and one-on-one. You will be photographing your project on your own, yet Spencer and Q. will be available to help in the field if anyone starts to struggle. We have found that the most growth often occurs during these moments of struggle, and see them as opportunities for learning. In that light, we will encourage you to challenge yourself, while the team will be ready to jump in and provide inspiration or guidance if needed.
Q. and Spencer will also meet with you individually to discuss portfolios, career development, personal vision, and photographic craft. The workshop concludes Friday night with a multimedia presentation of your completed project.
Our workshops are not photo tours. They are fun, intensive, and challenging learning experiences in which you give yourself the chance to focus on your work, on your artistic development as a photographer. You'll be surrounded by like-minded people and taught by some of the best in the business.
